Caribbean Rum, Cigars, and Immigration through 19th Century Portland Harbor

An Evening with David Carey

David Carey, Jr., Assistant Professor of History at the University of Southern Maine, will present a lecture, Caribbean Rum, Cigars, and Immigration through Nineteenth-Century Portland Harbor.  Thanks to a vibrant trade with Latin America, particularly the Caribbean, Portland Harbor was one of the most important ports in the nineteenth-century Atlantic world.  In his talk, Carey will explore the varied influences of that trade.  In addition to the ship captains and sailors who frequently traveled between Portland Harbor and the Caribbean, Latin Americans studied and lived in southern Maine. Those who settled here helped to create a cosmopolitan city with their vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and labor.

The talk is sponsored in part by the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust. Lectures are free for members and $5 for non-members.
