PHM VOLUNTEERS - WE SING YOUR PRAISES!

The importance of our gracious volunteers who contribute their time and effort on behalf of Portland Harbor Museum can't be overstated - these "unpaid professionals" make it all possible! In addition to our shop keepers and docents who prominently greet visitors to the museum, there are many others working behind the scenes. High in this department are Linda Johnson and Elsie Legere, who made zillions of phone calls to make sure all shifts were covered.

We owe a debt of thanks to those who served on Maggie Beals' Exhibit Committee - Dorcas Hathaway, Anne Tarbell, Joanne Peterson, Dawn Simard and Neil MacCormick. These folks spent many hours doing a systematic survey of ships' logs, diaries, letters and newspapers to research the Tall Ships exhibition. Later Jack Reynolds, Rusty Nelson, Ed Legere and Bill Alexander added their contributions through tasks such as painting and label making. Volunteers were also able to assist in dry mounting, thanks to our new press compliments of Biddeford & Saco Savings Bank, and exhibit hanging.

Facility maintenance requires untold hours of volunteer support and trustee Ed Legere deserves a blue ribbon in that department. In addition to helping out as a docent, Fort Preble tour guide and outreach speaker, Ed could often be found with a paint brush or tool in his hand. Other folks who helped with painting the office and other work on the building include Jack Peterson, Bob Bent, Bill Leavitt, Roger Allen and David Morton.

Museum Collections took a giant step forward this year when the Collections Policy was completely revised and our Collections reorganized by a committee consisting of Dan Tipton (Chair), Frank Brooks, Bill Tolman, Dawn Simard, Meredith Tipton, Ed Legere and Maggie Beals. Always willing to help with hospitality when a group tour visited the museum were Bill & Barbara Tolman, Belle Graney and Henty LaRou. We owe so much to our publicity gurus, Rusty Nelson and Pam Boudreau! The Lecture Series shines under the guidance of committee chair Gail Cross, John Houghton, Bob Bent, Cara Blazier, Rusty Nelson and Dan Tipton. Speakers who go on the road with slides in hand as part of the Educational Outreach Program include Myron Read, Rusty Nelson, Fred Thompson, David Morton, Maggie Beals, Bob Bent and Ed Legere. Bob Blackwood takes time from his busy day to do bank deposits, Doris White attends to the museum's gardens and Jack Reynolds heads up our web site.

Not to be forgotten is the long list of Lick & Chat Club members, who faithfully prepare mailings while catching up on the latest. The list goes on and on! Is it any wonder that Portland Harbor Museum is recognized for the quality of its programs and commitment to preserving our maritime heritage?
